My Gram

Today, my Mom and I went to vist my grandmother at her nursing home. Gram is ninety-five. She is mentally sharp most days-true for all of us after a certain age. She is still interested in plants and flowers. She always has quirky and amusing observations about the other residents to share with visitors. Her nickname among the staff is Fire because she is quite the sassy one.

Since the storm, Gram has moved three times. She was evacuated to Alexandria with the rest of the residents right before the storm and stayed there until Thanksgiving. She was moved to a home in the New Orleans area and had to remain there from the end of November until March while her regular place was being restored after significant flooding. Now she's back in her comfort zone again and many of the pre-storm staff have returned, too. Unfortunately, many of the residents did not make it back.

Gram is still a tough chick and she is an inspiration to my entire family.

She's still a pistol. She had my mom and me in stitches yesterday because she wanted to know why she didn't get to wear better shoes than tennis shoes. Too boring was the verdict because they are white. My mom had on a cute pair of sandals and she complimented my mom about them several times. I think she had her eye on those.

A big hello to your grandmama! Jim's grandma was pretty sharp still in her nineties, too. So you come from a long-lived family - that's lucky for you.

Re-locating would be so much harder at that age. I feel sorry for those other residents.

All the moving she's done confuses Gram at times. She asked us a couple of times yesterday if she was staying put for a while.

My mom is almost seventy and she's going strong so I am hopeful that those genes will stand me in good stead later on, too.

Awwww, that's a lovely story. It gives me hope for myself and my mum when she gets that age.

Happy mothers day to all of you.

Thanks! Gram has always been a character. When we were over 18, she used to invite my girl cousins and I over to her house for daiquiri parties and we'd all get drunk.
