On The Family Front

I found out earlier this week that my cousin, Jim, has bladder cancer. Based on what I've heard from his younger sister, Sharon, it's not an easily treatable cancer and the prospects for survival are not considered good. She's read 2-3 years. His general practitioner told him 2. I don't understand giving the shorter time frame to a patient. But he did wait almost a year to get to a doctor after the first appearance of blood in his urine.

He's forty-eight. He's taken a bitter turn in the last few years. I hope that he can find some peace so that whatever time he has left will be positive for him.

Gosh, he's sooo young! I'm sorry to hear this.

I know someone else who has a family member who has been given something like 2 years to live. I say in these cases, where doctors have given up on one, that exploring alternative therapies is the only way to go - accupuncture, visualization, diet, etc.

I don't like it when doctors give such a concrete amount of time. I know they need to be honest so people are prepared so why not give a timespan like 2-4 years instead of just saying two years. It can make it a self-fulfilling prophecy especially for people with a negative outlook like my cousin. His younger sister is planning to talk with him about some alternative therapies. We are hoping he'll be open-minded toward her suggestions.
