Dollar Bill Jefferson

Edwin Edwards, David Duke, Bill Jefferson... Just a few of the names giving Louisiana politics that sticky, not so clean feeling.

Edwin Edwards, our former governor, is currently serving time for racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, and wire fraud.

David Duke, former LA state representative and member of the Klu Klux Klan, served time for filing a false tax return and mail fraud.

Louisiana voters once faced choosing between well-known crook Edwards and well-known racist Duke for Governor. I held my nose and cast my ballot for Edwards.

And now Bill Jefferson has been indicted on 16 counts , including racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 235 years.

Another "proud" day for Louisiana and New Orleans. Another potential hindrance to getting desperately needed dollars for people still struggling to get their lives in order after Katrina.

Jefferson is a dirtbag, but he's not unique.

the unique factor for Jefferson is that none of those other scoundrels are held up as a reason Why It's Okay For The Nation Not To Give A Damn About New Orleans Because Everyone Down There Is Crooked And/Or So Ignorant They Vote For A Crook And People Like That Don't Deserve Any Help.

I know that corrupt politicians aren't just from here but it seems we get more than our fair share of them in these parts. And because ours are so over the top-freezing money, KKK, gambling governor-they get lots of press out of state.

When I lived in San Fran and Jackson, MS (two quite disparate places based on distance apart and mindset), everybody knew about Edwards and Duke even though they were strictly LA guys.

Not to mention the fact that our citizens kept voting for Edwards and Jefferson. People here would probably still vote for Edwin if he could run from jail.

No, but I'm sure they'll be all over now. Not that I blame them. The other great news is that Nagin is considering running for either Jefferson's seat or for governor.

He already has a warchest of $500,000. I really don't think he can get elected to either position because he's alienated so many people outside of Orleans Parish. But who believed that Jefferson would get reelected? That must certainly give Nagin hope of success.
