Two Small Dogs Almost Died Twice Last Night

Those two small dogs are Bess and Rocky. They got out of the front door in an attempt to ride home with my parents - and because the screen door did not close all the way. Once they were free, they decided to romp around the neighborhood. Normally, they run down the street to visit our neighbors' Labs but they were distracted by some ducks hanging out in someone's yard and began to chase them. This caused the ducks to flee toward a very busy street at the end of our block and the dogs went right after them. The Corgi herding instinct totally seized them in its grasp and they were oblivious to the cars and us. They were totally focused on the ducks.

John finally managed to grab Rocky. I almost had Bess and then another duck appeared so she takes off after that one. She and the duck were on a bridge with me standing in the middle of it stopping traffic before a car hit me, my fool dog or the petrified duck. Traffic started to back up and a young guy jumped out of his truck and got between Bess and the duck so I could pick her up. As I carried Bess back to our yard, I noticed the duck following us. Bess started struggling to get to the duck again. I don't know if the duck was confused or wanted more "playtime" with Bess but it walked behind us for a couple of minutes before flying off.

By the time, we got into our backyard I was ready to kill both dogs. I had been so scared during all the running around and car dodging but my fear turned to anger once the danger was over. I know it was wrong to be angry with them because they were just doing what herding dogs do. But they were not listening at all to Juannie or me and could have both been hit by cars because of it. I am so thankful that I did not wind up at the emergency vet on my birthday.

Juannie and I talked about more obedience training for them once we all calmed down and resumed our pleasant evening. So I will be looking into that for both of the little scamps in the near future. And we are getting the screen door spring repaired.

I am very tired today because I didn't sleep very well. I kept dreaming about chasing Bess and Rocky and woke up several times unnerved by everything that happened all over again.

I hate it when dogs get out... especially that awful sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.

I used to see this old man walking his dog at the park every morning (it was a corgi, btw) and the dog would walk about 15 feet in front of him without a leash. If it got to far ahead it would stop and turn around and wait for the old man to catch up. It was amazing! I wish I had a dog like that.

That so sweet. I wish my two could be trusted like that. They are both too rambunctious and mischievous.

I am sorry! I can't even imagine how stressful and frustrating that would be all at once. A mix of love and fear and anger.

I'm glad they are ok.

It was definitely nerve-wracking. Even though they upset me, I'll still be giving them extra cuddles the next few days!

Of course you are! You love them flaws and all.

That would have been so awful - doesn't bear thinking about - the little scamps. You just know they know they're not supposed to take off.

My parent's cocker spaniel, Casserole, was exactly the same way. You simply couldn't trust her off the leash - she wouldn't listen and would go scampering off at a run. Some dogs just don't take to obedience training - or, sometimes, it is just too late.

That's why I also never agree to have Mr. McGinty stay with my in-laws. I know they wouldn't do it intentionally, but when you are not used to animals, it is far too easy to forget to shut a door - and it takes only a minute. Jim and I are so well trained, we are simply not capable of leaving the house - front or back - without securing the door or screen. I don't even have to think about it - it's automatic.

Oh they know the rules! They just choose to ignore them when it's convenient - little brats.
