Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted...

...by the terrible twosome known as Katrina and Rita, I asked my LJ friends to recommend some of their favorite books. I was in denial on August 26th and wanted to pretend that all the projected storm tracks were not pointing directly at New Orleans. So I focused on books as a brief escape.

Here are the recommendations:

aromenis - Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates and The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri

weelisa - The Girls' Guide To Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank and The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death, The Most Devastating Plague of All Time by John Kelly

vwip - Daylight by Elizabeth Knox, Moondust (In Search of The Men Who Fell To Earth) by Andrew Smith, Tales From Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin and Big Bang by Simon Singh

ladymeow - Anything written by Hunter S. Thompson and White Oleander by Janet Fitch

bibliovixen - Griffin & Sabine boxed set by Nick Bantock and The Art of Eating by M.F.K. Fisher

artemiswinter - Kushiel Series by Jacqueline Carey and Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

Thanks again for your suggestions. I almost used my book gift cards while we were evacuated but decided to wait. I wanted to be in a happy place when I selected my new books. So now I will start shopping - online since my local B&N and Borders are closed for a while - and buy based on the list above. (Feel free to add more to the list!)

You can see some quotes on my journal - if you're at all interested in the Victorians, then The Victorian House by Judith Flanders is a great, non-fiction read which I can also recommend. The other good news is that the paperback only cost me 20 bucks.

Happy reading - you deserve the break!
