I Love Book Lists!

100 Best First Lines from Novels.

Look what made the list:
22. It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the house-tops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness. —Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford (1830)

They skipped over a good one:

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold."

-Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson

Opening lines

There were some excellent choices in there! I must say, Kafka's opening line for "The Metamorphosis" (just about my all-time favorite book!), changes just a bit with each translation and translator. One might say that opening line is going through a metamorphosis of its own!

My all-time, bar-none, favorite opening line to any novel is from Bret Easton Ellis' "Less Than Zero":

"People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles."

Such a perfect line for that book about disconnected people.

You can read the first portion of this awesome title at amazon.com.

Want some more amazing things to read? Try Nicholson Baker's "The Mezzanine", again, one of my all-time favorite novels:

I shall close with the opening from my beloved Thomas Hardy's "The Return of the Native":
