Library + Mall = More Reading

If it gets more people reading, I am all for it. I wish the lame mall by my house had a library in it.

"In 2001, the King County Library System, which includes Seattle and is one of the largest circulating libraries in the United States, opened its first library in a shopping mall after the owner of the popular Crossroads Mall in eastern King County contacted the library and offered space.

The library at the Crossroads Mall has proven to be a popular place for spouses who are waiting for their mates to finish shopping, says Karen Hardiman, managing librarian of this branch. Mall employees visit during their lunch hour. And the computers, which have wireless Internet access, attract job-seekers who come in to use them in their hunt for employment."

Squirreling Away Eggcorns

"The linguists at Language Log have coined the word eggcorn. An eggcorn is created by speakers (or writers) who, when searching for a word the meaning and pronunciation of which they know but the etymology and the spelling of which they have forgotten or never learnt, come up with a form they contrive based on recogizable lexical items that provide the meaning they are after. Eggcorn itself is an eggcorn: Someone, somewhere didn’t quite know how to spell acorn and thought that an egg-shaped seed would most likely be called an egg corn."

Purple Is The New Red

This is especially for bibliovixen because she has a passion for ink and mustbered because she has a passion for a certain color...

I just worry about the future psyche of our nation if it's true that a page full of red ink is frightening to students.

"A mix of red and blue, the color purple embodies red's sense of authority but also blue's association with serenity, making it a less negative and more constructive color for correcting student papers, color psychologists said. Purple calls attention to itself without being too aggressive. And because the color is linked to creativity and royalty, it is also more encouraging to students."

I am all for sensitivity and academic encouragement but am I the only one who finds this wimpy?

I Go Both Ways... My Husband Will Like That

Thanks to arikatt for this

</td><td valign="top">You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.
Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.
