The Miracle On Ice

I am not a hockey fan but I love the Olympics. And I remember watching the USA hockey team upset the Soviet team 4-3 at the Lake Placid Olympic Games twenty-five years ago today.

I was fourteen and watched as much of the Games as I could. Even people who didn't like the Olympics watched back then because there wasn't much else on in the days before cable. I watched with my dad and my three brothers. We were all caught up in the action even though none of us knew anything about hockey. Once the US team went ahead, it was agonizing. We watched the seconds oh so slowly pass as we hoped that our players could hang on to the lead. And Al Michaels perfectly expressed the exuberance and disbelief we all felt as the seconds ticked down to zero when he shouted, "Do you believe in miracles?"
