No Hurricanes Allowed

Behold the power of two women who are friends armed with tequila-based beverages and a cordless glue gun.

June 1st has been looming large on the calendar and in the minds of many in these parts for months. While we were hanging out during Jazz Fest, yellowdoggrl came up with the fine idea to ring in the 2006 Hurricane Season with an Anti-Hurricane Party. Then yellowdoggrl was inspired by the ghosts of past shoe purchases and suggested that we make shoebox altars using storm debris, cherished items and New Orleans-oriented doodads (like Mardi Gras beads) as part of our festivities.

Our ingredients:

Creativity - It is the opposite of destruction.
Voodoo - It's New Orleans.
Margaritas - In the world of alcholic beverages, they are the anti-Hurricane. Hurricanes are red, sweet and rummy. Margaritas are green, tart and salty.

In the midst of our magic-making, I told yellowdoggrl that I felt like a kid in a candy store with all the arts and crafts supplies and Mardi Gras beads at our disposal. Below are a few pictures of our works in progress. We will continue adding little tokens throughout hurricane season to keep the magic going.

Got Our Mojo Workin' Got Our Mojo Workin'
Nolagrl Gris Gris Nolagrl Gris Gris
Silverdee Magic Silverdee Magic

(We both used pieces of FEMA blue roofing tarp, Katrina diamonds, vintage New Orleans postcards and Mardi Gras beads.)

Cool! I've never heard of shoebox altars but they look wonderful. Kinda like a diorama.

Damn, I loved making dioramas when I was in intermediate school.

Once I learned what they were, I would make them ALL. THE. TIME.

If I read a book I liked --- I made one for it.

If I saw a movie I liked --- I made one for it.

If I had to turn in a report on something --- I'd figure out a way to make one for it.

My name is ErosLane, and I am a DJ (diorama junkie).

I have never built a diorama but I did satisfy the urge to create minature worlds by having Barbies and Barbie furniture. I spent more time setting up their house than actually playing with the dolls.

To this day I'll spot pencil sharpeners shaped like telephones or sewing machines and I'll think - perfect size for Barbie!

Cool idea... those shoe box art works remond me of the shoe box mardi gras floats we used to make in school. But what are "Katrina diamonds"?

little broken bits of glass from when they gutted my house, big heavy chunks instead of shards, multi-faceted even. I picked up 63 of them out of three spots in the yard.
