Bee-Side Myself

I'm on bee kick apparently. But Bees are my favorite insect. I love them. I don't run away from them in my yard. I actually talk to them. "Hi Bee! How are you today Bee?" I say as we regularly cross paths. I like to see them buzzing around among my flowers. And I am interested in bee culture. I think they have a fascinating social system.

So I am very excited to find out about "Bee Movie" featuring the voices of Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Eddie Izzard, Rip Torn, Ben Stiller, Alan Arkin and Megan Mullally. Great cast including three of my favorite stand-up comedians in an animated movie about an insect that I really love.

Eddie's all over the place lately. I haven't watch The Riches yet because I've been taking a class on Monday nights. But I have them recorded. I need to catch up.

Irwin Allen bees
You should be able to locate the Bee Movie trailer online: try YouTube or apple.com > quicktime > trailers.

As a teenager, one of my favorite books was Arthur Herzog's THE SWARM. I read it over and over until the pages started falling out. Then they made it into a movie, which my parents would NOT drive me to. Fortunately, a neighbor I babysat for took a friend and I for an afternoon movie one day. They thought it was campy & dumb (it was!!), but I loved it. Oh, my droogie, how I loved it so!

I mean, c'mon! KILLER BEES!!! You get the Dad from MY THREE SONS having an autumal love affair with Melanie from GONE WITH THE WIND. It had one of the twins from THE PATTY DUKE SHOW on it! It had THOSE TWO GUYs that was always in EVERY western ever made! It had Tom Joad in it You get that crazy laughing guy who pushed the lady in the wheelchair down the steps as an Army General who is really tee-d off by these bees, and takes it personally!! F-ing bees!!1!

Yes, it was camp. But it was great camp!

As further proof of my virginity and unpopularity through high school, I was in orchestra and collected movie soundtracks. (This was when one out of every 15 movies would issue a film score on wax.) I consider Jerry Goldsmith's score to THE SWARM to simply "be" one of his finest. I used to listen to that over and over and over. I still have it; its black cover rubbed slightly white from years of sliding it in and out of the stacks.

So, I say, "Keep the bee pics coming!" :-) Whoohooo!

Re: Irwin Allen bees
My favorite bee movie is The Savage Bees. It takes place in New Orleans. Here's the description: "In this horror-drama the festive fun of the annual Mardi Gras celebration is brought to a halt when a swarm of African killer bees escape from a foreign freighter."

The climax takes place in the Superdome. All the bees have been lured to a VW Beetle which is driven into the Dome. Then they turn down the air conditioner in the Dome to freeze the bees.

It was the talk of the town while it was being filmed here when I was a kid. The Dome was brand new so it was a big deal that it was featured in the movie. And, of course, everyone watched it when it came on TV.

OMG!!! The Savage Bees had Ben Johnson it it as well! How many bee movies was he going to star in? What was he thinking? "Gosh, I've been in every western ever made, but western aren't pop'lar with the young 'uns today. BEE MOVIES. That's it. Kids love bees. I'll be in every bee movie." *hahaha*

As still further, continued proof of my extended virginity, I collected movie posters as well. Now, this was in the day when they were IMPOSSIBLE to obtain. Of couse, I had one for THE SWARM, but I also had a great one with John Saxon (I think) in a torn shirt, all buff and shit, while this GINORMOUS bee is desending upon him. It was the Conan of Bee Movies. I'll have to look it up!

I'm okay with bees, but man I hate wasps.

I don't mess with wasps and they don't mess with me. That's the deal. But we don't share the same closeness that the bees and I have.

Oh, it looks like a honey of a film. Hollywood is all abuzz about it.

I think it will receive a grade from the critics of B+!

See what you make me do?
All I know is that the public will swarm to see it!
