You're pretty anti-war, so I think you would really appreciate All Quiet on the Western Front - hey, Hitler felt the need to ban the book, so you know it has to contain a powerful message of peace.

The Lost Weekend was really the first time Hollywood treated alcoholism seriously - up until then, it was just a big joke (think Thin Man series).

You would like All About Eve - women making bitchy comments about each other - fun!

The Last Emperor is a visually beautiful film.

I am ashamed that I haven't seen many of the ones unbolded on my list especially since I worked at freakin' Blockbuster for 3 years! Well except for Gladiator. I think the Academy made a mistake giving Gladiator Best Picture over Traffic or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. (I'm still angry about this apparently.)

I liked Crouching Tiger a lot - that ending haunts you, doesn't it?

I cry like a fool when I watch this movie, too. I haven't seen it in a while. I need to watch it soon.

someone told me that Rebecca is so repetitive, if i wanted to read it for the story alone i'd go bonkers. do you agree? i am very in love with it when people tell me about it, and i read its wikipedia synopsis often.

I must admit that the last time I read Rebecca was over 10 years ago. I don't remember it being repetitive. I do know that I am always captivated by the wistful unnamed narrator who begins her story by recounting a dream. It's hard for me not to be sucked in by the first line, "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
