1st Book Group Meeting

Last night was the first meeting of the new book group. There were only four of us but several others are interested who could not attend for various reasons. The four ladies present - guys are welcome but none have joined yet - chose our first five books for 2005. Everyone brought at least one book for the group to consider and two of the ladies had recommendations they'd gotten from others who are in book groups of their own.

The first five books are...

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Unless by Carol Shields
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

I am very excited to begin Middlesex. I didn't suggest this one but it kills two birds with one stone for me. It's one of the books I need to read before my 40th in August. Our next meeting is on 02/16.

I am glad that I have gotten one of my 2005 commitments rolling and it's only 01/20/05!

Oh! Middlesex is so amazing. It is honestly one of my favorite books.

Which books do you need to read before your 40th? (And why?) (If you don't mind me asking.)

I'll have to see what you think of the ones above - I always seem to be looking for something to read these days, what with two hours on the train each working day.

As a book-obsessed person, I have the habit of buying new books while I have others I already purchased languishing on the shelf. So I set the goal this past summer to read all the books I owned or received by 12/31/04 by my 40th in August. Then I will start off the next 40 years buying lots more new books. Here's the last update I did on my progress...

I enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees. It was a bit of a different read for me, I usually prefer mysteries, romance, fantasy/sci fi...but I was looking for something a different so I picked it up at the library.
