Reading Relay

I am finally posting this! Thanks to bibliovixen.

You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book do you want to be?
If you've not read it or seen the film then you need to know this is a novel of a future world where fascist anti-intellectualism rules and dissidents take it upon themselves to memorize and thus become a book, a perpetuation of a treasured work of learning or literature, against the day when it is safe once again to think freely.

I would be To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I did not read this until I was an adult. I was struck by how the book captures the ephemeral nature of childhood and it has two of my favorite characters of all time, Scout and Atticus.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character in a piece of literature?
Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities. I loved the character when I read the book but was even more smitten after seeing Dirk Bogarde's portrayal of him in the 1958 film.

The last book you bought is:
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini for book group.

The last book you read:
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I read it for book group.

What are you currently reading?
The Kite Runner and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke.

Five books you would take to a deserted island:
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively
Love In The Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Complete Poems by Anne Sexton

Who are you going to pass this stick to (3 persons) and why?
weelisa, luxlis and earlgreyhot because I am curious about their answers to this quiz.

Oh, good one - I see we're both bringing the Complete Works of Shakespeare to our desert island - lots of bang for the buck with that.

I saw a live stage version of To Kill A Mockingbird a couple of years ago - it was very powerful - makes one all verklempt. I forget what year in school we had to read it - the thing I most strongly remember is how hot and dusty everyone seemed.

I'm going to have to think about this very carefully cause it's all legally binding you know... :0
