If you've not read it or seen the film then you need to know this is a novel of a future world where fascist anti-intellectualism rules and dissidents take it upon themselves to memorize and thus become a book, a perpetuation of a treasured work of learning or literature, against the day when it is safe once again to think freely.
I would be To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I did not read this until I was an adult. I was struck by how the book captures the ephemeral nature of childhood and it has two of my favorite characters of all time, Scout and Atticus.
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character in a piece of literature?
Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities. I loved the character when I read the book but was even more smitten after seeing Dirk Bogarde's portrayal of him in the 1958 film.
